THURSDAY, MARCH 19th
WALTZ:  Hesitations

Hesitations were created in the Waltz in the late 19th century to help the dancers adjust and still keep timing with the music.  A Hesitation in Waltz is when the dancers step on the first beat of the measure and hold (hesitate) over the 2nd and 3rd beats of the measure.  Key to the use of Hesitations is the dance frame as well as rise and fall.  In this series, we will explore different uses of hesitations and pay attention to the dance frame and rise and fall as well.

The New Happy Hour

Ballroom dancing is for anyone.

It’s a healthy activity for your heart, it generates new nerve cells in your brain – almost twice as much as doing a crossword puzzle *, and countless couples attribute dance lessons as reigniting their relationship.

So what are you doing after work tonight?

Let's Go
Paul Sulzman, Ballroom Dance Instructor, Ventura Dance

Dance Takes More Than Just Feet

There is no precise definition as to what a “ballroom dance” is, definitions vary.  I was originally trained in ballroom dancing to compete.  What I teach now is “partner dancing” for social purposes including weddings. I also choreograph dances for performance. Partner dances are traditionally done in ballrooms, nightclubs, restaurants, among other places and may include Waltz, Swing, Argentine Tango, Country Western 2-Step, Salsa among others. What makes partner dancing distinct is that it is an act of two people communicating while moving together to music. When done properly, any type of partner dancing creates a constant state of communication: leading and following. Improve your communication abilities on the dance floor and you improve your communication abilities in other areas of life. Where is communication important in our lives? Where is communication NOT important in our lives? So aside from the physical benefits and flexing nerve pathways in your brain, I have found that learning to dance can be a great way to develop your communication skills with others, whether it’s a simple acquaintance, a friend, a new spouse or one of many years. This is something worthy to consider: Deepening your communication skills.

Join me on the dance floor and I’ll show you an experience that will change your life.

Did You Know?

A major study has been added to the growing evidence that stimulating one’s mind by dancing can ward off Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia. Dancing integrates several brain functions at once — kinesthetic, rational, musical, and emotional — further increasing your neural connectivity. ~Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City

Did You Know?

The study wanted to see if any physical or cognitive recreational activities influenced mental acuity. They discovered that some activities had a significant beneficial effect. Other activities had none. The only physical activity to offer protection against dementia was frequent dancing. ~Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City

“Sol and I have been taking private ballroom lessons with Paul for over 6 months and love every minute of it. As a couple to be able to dance in complete sync with each other is heaven. Paul has the patience to teach complicated dance moves, make them look simple and gives you the confidence to master them. Thank you Paul for adding another exciting new dimension to our life.” ~Barbara Bowman, Sol De La Torre Bueno – Business Owners Read More >>
